Tuberous Breasts: What They Are, Symptoms and How to Correct Them

Updated on • Reviewed by Dr. Gustavo Sordo, plastic surgeon
Tuberous breasts are an abnormality that affects the shape and structure of breast tissue, generating aesthetic and psychological concerns in those who suffer from it, having a significant impact on their self-esteem and emotional well-being. This condition is often misunderstood, leading to misinformation and a lack of suitable options for those who suffer from this condition. With this article we hope to empower women to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Let's delve deeper into the topic.
What are tuberous breasts?
Tubular breasts are a breast malformation characterized by a tubular or elongated shape of the mammary gland, due to insufficient breast tissue. Their appearance is more like a tube than a rounded breast.
If you're looking for information on how it's corrected—the degrees, the technique, and real cases that have been operated on—you'll find it on the tuberous breast correction page in Madrid.
This type of breast has a lot of separation between both breasts, the areolas are usually large and there is a lack of development in the lower part, in addition to the fact that they may have a prominent nipple and an irregular skin surface, which gives them a different appearance to what we conceive as normal breasts.
Tubular breasts, also called constricted breasts, get their name from the tubular shape that the breast takes on when it develops during adolescence. It is the most common breast abnormality, which is why many young women turn to plastic surgeons seeking help that will allow them to lead a completely normal life and free them from their complexes. It should be noted that it is not a hereditary defect.

Causes
Although the exact causes of this development are not fully understood, it is believed to be related to hormonal and genetic factors. The presence of a genetic alteration of the tissue that covers the mammary gland, which exhibits abnormal rigidity, prevents the breast from developing harmoniously during adolescence, that is, the mammary glands do not develop properly, which results in an alteration in the growth of the breast tissue.
Symptoms and characteristics
Tuberous breasts can be detected through observation and are distinguished by the following characteristics:
Tubular shape
The elongated and narrow shape of the breast resembles a tube. This conical or tubular shape is one of the most identifying features, which visibly distinguishes them from normal rounded breasts.
Narrow base
The base of the tuberous breast is narrower and tighter, which contributes to the tubular shape.
Prominent areolas
The areolas are larger and more prominent than normal, due to the abnormal development of the areolar tissue, which is part of the breast malformation. The areolas may also appear off-center due to the abnormal shape of the breasts.
Insufficient breast tissue
There is a lack of volume in the lower part of the breast, which accentuates the tubular appearance.
Separation between breasts
Tubular breasts have a very wide space in the center of the chest, which creates an uneven appearance.

Uneven skin
The skin on the breast surface is irregular.
breast asymmetry
Breast asymmetry is commonly observed ; the breasts present a significant difference in their size and shape.
Degrees of tuberous breasts
There are different classifications of tuberous breasts. The most common ones are based on the degree of severity and their specific characteristics. Let's see:
Grade I
Mild contraction. This type of tuberous breast accounts for more than 50% of cases. The poor development of the breast affects the lower inner quadrant. The base of the breast is relatively wide, but the areola is deviated downwards or inwards. In these cases, there is usually a large separation between the breasts.
Grade II
Moderate contraction. This type corresponds to about 25% of cases. The absence of breast development affects the two lower quadrants, internal and external. The tubular shape is very pronounced and the projection of the nipple is more evident, the areola is seen deviated downwards.
Grade III
Severe grade. This corresponds to less than 20% of cases of tubular breasts. All quadrants are affected. The base of the breasts is narrow and depending on the degree of growth of the breast, the deformity will vary. The larger the breast, the more tubular it will appear.
Consequences of tuberous breasts
Tuberous breasts have significant emotional and psychological consequences. Women who suffer from this condition may experience:
Low self-esteem
Dissatisfaction with the appearance of one's breasts affects one's self-perception, causing negative emotions such as shame, sadness, frustration or anger, and leading to self-esteem problems.
Insecurity in relationships
Breasts are a very important part of a woman's femininity; for this reason, tubular breasts make her feel insecure in intimate situations.
Social anxiety
Concerns about one's appearance are especially prevalent in adolescence and young adulthood, generating anxiety in social situations such as the beach or the pool, inhibiting them from frequenting these places.
Fortunately, plastic surgery now offers a solution to this type of deformity. When deciding to undergo surgery, do not hesitate to find a professional who is an expert in breast surgery and who specializes in tuberous breasts.
Treatment
Once breast development is complete, that is, after leaving adolescence, the patient can undergo surgery to correct tubular breasts: breast augmentation or breast reshaping surgery, which corrects the shape and volume of the breasts. The plastic surgeon will evaluate each patient's specific situation and discuss the most appropriate options. The two main options are:
- Correction with implant
This method is very effective and offers aesthetically pleasing results. It consists of placing breast implants to increase the volume and improve the shape of the breast. If the abnormality is mild, it can be corrected by implanting a prosthesis, without the need for complete glandular remodelling, as in the case of severe malformations.
- Correction without implant
There is also the correction of tubular breasts using surgical techniques that reshape breast tissue, where implants are not necessary. This procedure includes the removal of excess tissue and the restructuring of existing breast tissue.
Tuberous breasts present two simultaneous problems that must be addressed in the same procedure: a constrictive ring at the base that prevents the lower pole from developing, and a narrow breast base with a herniated areola. Our approach is to perform radial scoring —controlled radial incisions in the parenchyma of the lower pole—to release this ring and allow the tissue to expand, and then place the implant in the subfascial plane.
One detail that makes all the difference for us: in these cases, we use micropolyurethane implants and anatomical prostheses. Micropolyurethane acts like Velcro, adhering to the tissue and preventing the implant from rotating or descending through the released lower pole, which is precisely the risk of this surgery. Years ago, we used the submuscular plane for these cases, but we stopped doing so: the subfascial plane with micropolyurethane provides more natural and stable results. And it's important to state this clearly: tuberous breasts are not candidates for the Preserve technique ; they require this specific work on the parenchyma.
How much does tuberous breast surgery cost?
The price of surgery to correct tuberous breasts varies considerably depending on the city, the surgeon's experience, and the type of procedure performed. At our clinic, the price can range around €6.400, including initial consultations, hospital fees, and the surgeon's fees. The final price is always personalized and tailored to each individual case, so an initial consultation is necessary.

The results of surgery to correct tuberous breasts are noticeable and significant, with a clear improvement in the shape and symmetry of the breasts. Depending on the degree of severity of the anomaly, reconstructive surgery for tuberous breasts meets the following objectives:
- Change the conical shape of the breast, making it more rounded.
- Correct and minimize the appearance of the areola.
- Using breast implants or fat grafts from the patient herself to add volume to areas of the chest.
- When the breasts are asymmetrical, implants of various sizes (or different fat transfers) are used to obtain the desired symmetry.

How to stop having tuberous breasts without surgery?
The only solution for tuberous breasts is surgery, but there are some non-surgical alternatives that can help improve their appearance, should you prefer not to undergo surgery. These options include:
- Strengthening exercises: Some exercises help tone the pectoral muscles and improve the appearance of the breasts. Exercises such as bench press, push-ups and the use of weights are beneficial.
- Wearing proper bras: A well-fitting bra offers support and enhances the shape of the breasts. There are bras designed specifically for women with tuberous breasts.
- Aesthetic treatments: Some clinics offer aesthetic treatments, such as mesotherapy or lipotransfer, which help improve the appearance of the breasts. However, it is important to discuss these options with a health professional.
