The Perfect Male Nose: Common Features

Updated on • Reviewed by Dr. Gustavo Sordo, plastic surgeon
When someone decides to undergo rhinoplasty in Madrid or ultrasonic rhinoplasty in Madrid , a personalized assessment of their case is essential . As we've mentioned in previous posts, not all rhinoplasties are the same, although we can divide them into two main groups with common characteristics: male rhinoplasty and female rhinoplasty, depending on whether we're talking about a male or female nose.
What characteristics does the male nose have?
In general, men have thicker skin , larger structures , a greater likelihood of having a history of trauma , and a completely different ultimate goal than women.
My male patients often want to gently refine certain aspects of their nose . In addition, men are more likely to experience breathing problems , many of which stem from childhood trauma.
First consultation rhinoplasty men
Similar to our other initial consultations, when a man comes to our Plastic Surgery Clinic in Madrid for rhinoplasty, we will conduct a thorough assessment of his case and a personalized rhinoplasty simulation to achieve the most optimal result. This assessment will involve taking a series of photographs which, combined with our computerized simulation software, will provide us with the best possible realistic results achievable with ultrasonic rhinoplasty . The patient's examination will include both an external and internal assessment. It is crucial to examine the condition of his nasal turbinates and septum , as well as to check for any breathing problems related to the anatomy of his nose.
Once the objectives are defined, an operative plan for performing the rhinoplasty will be designed and reviewed with the patient at their final preoperative visit. In all my rhinoplasty operations, the complete plan is defined and structured in advance. This makes the results much more predictable and reduces the time in the operating room.
Tips for male rhinoplasty
If you are a man and want to undergo rhinoplasty , before choosing a surgeon make sure that in addition to being an accredited plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon, he has experience in male rhinoplasty nose types .
Although we're talking about the same procedure, the problems and aesthetic goals addressed in male rhinoplasty are not the same as those in female rhinoplasty. If I had to summarize the most frequent mistake in male rhinoplasty in one sentence, it would be this: unintentional feminization . This occurs when the bridge is reduced too much or the tip is over-rotated. In men, we aim for a straight bridge—even slightly high, never concave—and a closed nasolabial angle , around 100 degrees compared to the 120 degrees that are usually more flattering in women, although this varies from patient to patient. A well-operated male nose is one that no one recognizes as having been operated on.
For example, a very athletic man with a drooping nasal tip and a small hump needed to breathe properly. I repositioned the tip using a septal extension graft and lateral crura graft, achieving a nasolabial angle of approximately 100°. I was conservative with the hump to avoid over-reducing the nasal structure. The result is masculine, and his breathing improved after repositioning the tip. I describe this in the case of functional rhinoplasty in a man with a drooping nasal tip.

Technically, men typically have thicker skin and stronger cartilage, so more structure and a more robust tip assembly are needed: a double vertical septal extension graft with the horizontal component of the Armadillo Tip (Froilán Páez). We work with hybrid preservation , impacting the abutment as a block instead of resecting it, and with ultrasound for all the bone work, which greatly reduces hematoma: a crucial detail for someone who wants to return to work quickly.
If you are considering surgery
In rhinoplasty in Madrid we explain how a masculine nose is planned: which nasofrontal angle and which dorsum are respected so as not to feminize the face, what the recovery is like and what the price includes.
