When considering a second breast augmentation surgery, it's common to wonder: can the implants be replaced? How long should I wait before doing so? Just like the first time, we're often faced with many questions.

Each case is assessed in consultation; the complete process, the cases and the price (from €4.500) are in second breast surgery.

Second breast surgery: can the implants be replaced?

In some cases, complications may arise following breast enlargement or reduction surgery that require further surgery. This can raise many questions, and it is essential to discuss them with the medical staff who will perform the operation.

There is no mandatory timeframe: implants don't expire after ten years. They are replaced for a specific reason—rupture, symptomatic capsular contracture, implant descent, changes in the body over the years, or a desire to modify the volume—and until such a reason exists, follow-up with check-ups and imaging tests is appropriate. If reoperation is necessary due to a complication, it should not be delayed; if it's for aesthetic reasons, it can be planned at a leisurely pace.

The important thing is that a second surgery is an opportunity to rethink the entire procedure , not just to change the implant: we review the plane according to the pinch test, the most suitable shell—micropolyurethane if there has been capsular contracture—and reconstruct the inframammary fold with a continuous suture if it has descended. And if the patient no longer wants implants, we create an autologous prosthesis using the Ribeiro technique and a prepectoral absorbable Vicryl mesh, with some lipofilling for the upper pole.

Prosthesis replacement

One of the most frequently asked questions is whether it is possible to replace implants. The answer is yes. Regardless of the reason – whether it is a broken implant, worn shell, sagging of the breast over the implant, dissatisfaction with the size or an unnatural result – the replacement procedure will follow a similar protocol as the first operation. The old implant will be replaced with a new one.

Previous study

Before surgery is performed, a thorough medical examination is required. This usually includes tests such as an MRI and a high-resolution ultrasound, which allow the condition of the prosthesis to be assessed and the most appropriate way to proceed with the replacement to be determined.

Second breast surgery: how long should it take to get it done?

Depending on the reason for requesting the change, it can be done at different times. Ideally, however, enough time should have passed for the operated area to fully recover from the first procedure, usually at least 1 or 2 months.

The same scar used in the first operation is usually reused , so it is advisable that the skin and muscles have recovered before incising the area again.

Therefore, if we are considering a second breast augmentation , it is best to consult a specialist and discuss our specific case. Only their professional judgment will determine the timeline and details of the procedure that will be necessary to correct the condition of our breasts.

It is essential to allow adequate time to allow the body to fully recover from the first procedure and thus minimize risks. In addition, consulting with a specialist will provide you with the necessary information to make informed decisions and ensure the best results. Remember that each case is unique, and proper care and attention are essential to achieving satisfaction with the final result.
