How to sleep after breast augmentation: The definitive guide

Updated on • Reviewed by Dr. Gustavo Sordo, plastic surgeon
One of the concerns a woman has when deciding to undergo breast augmentation in Madrid , aside from the surgical outcome , is the recovery period . When can I return to my normal activities? Will I experience a lot of pain? When can I exercise? These are some of the questions patients ask us in consultation, but above all: how should I sleep after breast augmentation? On my side or on my back?

Sleep on your side or on your back?
Rest is essential for a good recovery after surgery. With current breast augmentation techniques, we have achieved a faster postoperative period , allowing patients to return to their normal lives almost immediately. Even so, it is important to sleep at least 8 hours a day so that our bodies get adequate rest. For this reason, it is recommended to sleep on your back during the first few weeks after surgery. This allows scar tissue to form around the implant and prevents the risk of capsular contracture.
Some people find it uncomfortable to sleep on their back because they've always slept on their stomach. However, after breast augmentation, they'll find they're more comfortable sleeping on their back , at least for the first few weeks until their body adjusts to the changes.
In addition, during the first week we recommend using pillows to elevate the back and relieve breast pressure . Once the patient finds she can sleep through the night without pillows, she can also sleep on her side.
Each patient has their own recovery time , but it is always advisable to follow these guidelines:
- Sleep on your back for the first few weeks.
- Sleeping with the post-operative bra that was provided to you at the clinic.
- Sleep with your body elevated (45º angle) incorporating pillows under the back to relieve pressure from the implants.
- If you experience any abnormal pain, contact your surgeon.
Thanks to the "24h Recovery" breast augmentation technique used by Dr. Sordo , the recovery time is significantly reduced.
The patient can resume her normal activities 24 hours after the operation , and can raise her arms as soon as she leaves the operating room. Dr. Sordo strives for the best results combined with patient comfort; for this reason, he uses the most innovative techniques while prioritizing the patient's health.
Our guideline is to sleep on your back with your torso slightly elevated for the first few weeks: this reduces swelling and, above all, avoids asymmetrical pressure on an implant that is still settling. Sleeping on your side is permitted after 3-4 weeks, and only with caution; sleeping on your stomach is not recommended before a month and a half or two months. The reason for this is not the implant itself, but the inframammary fold that we reconstructed with continuous sutures, acting as an internal bra: it needs to heal without traction to prevent the implant from descending.
During this period, it's important to wear the post-operative orthopedic bra we provide during your consultation, even at night. And a note on comfort: with subfascial implants —the Preserve technique , which doesn't involve cutting the muscle—patients tend to sleep much better from the first night than when the implant is placed submuscularly, where pectoral muscle spasms are more bothersome in the first few days.

Practical Tips for Better Sleep
- Prepare your rest space:
- Use ergonomic pillows designed for post-surgical patients.
- Keep your bedroom dark and quiet to promote deep sleep.
- Control pain:
- Take any painkillers prescribed by your doctor before bed to avoid discomfort.
- Create a relaxing routine:
- Listen to calm music or do breathing exercises before going to bed.
- Avoid unnecessary stimuli:
- Limit screen time before bed and avoid caffeine in the hours leading up to bed.
When You Can Go Back to Sleeping on Your Side or Stomach
Most patients can return to their normal sleeping positions after the first 4-6 weeks , depending on their recovery. However, it is crucial to get your surgeon's approval before doing so.

Conclusion
Getting a good night's sleep after breast augmentation is an essential part of the recovery process. While it may be uncomfortable to adjust to new positions at first, these temporary habits will ensure that your results are long-lasting and satisfying.
Always remember to follow your surgeon's instructions and be patient with your recovery process. A good sleeping posture will not only protect your investment, but will also help you feel better at each stage. Sleep well and enjoy your new results with confidence!
