Restoring the anatomy of this abdomen, with an incisional hernia and diastasis recti, was not easy. We placed a mesh to repair the hernia and then reconstructed the musculature. We added liposuction to define the flanks.

What I found

A 50-year-old woman with an incisional hernia: the abdominal wall was open down the center, with the viscera pushing through the defect, in addition to diastasis recti and excess skin. The umbilicus was lost in the incisional hernia.

What did I do?

Abdominoplasty with two-layer abdominal wall repair: a mesh placed submuscularly behind the rectus abdominis muscles to close the defect, and on top of that, a plication of the rectus abdominis muscles to correct the diastasis recti. Liposuction of the flanks to define the waist. The umbilicus was reconstructed in a second stage with a neoumbilicoplasty.

Why in two parts

If the navel is repaired on the same day, the incision leaves the mesh exposed and can become infected. That's why we wait until everything is healed and the mesh is integrated, and then we create a new, small, and properly positioned navel.

what to watch

From the front, the flat abdomen and the waist defined by liposuction. And the navel, which is not the original: it's the one reconstructed in the second stage.

Before you compare yourself to this photo

When there's excess skin and the muscles have separated after pregnancy, the gym won't fix it. Abdominoplasty is the solution.
